MONTEGRIDOLFO CASTLE
A castle with very ancient origins dating back to Medieval times and which, across the centuries, has endured a troubled life as disputed territory because of its unique and strategic position. Situated on the border between the Romagna and Marche regions,. Montegridolfo does indeed stand on that line which once divided the lands possessed by the Malatesta dynasty of Rimini and the Montefeltro dynasty, Lords of nearby Urbino.
Its baptism came in the XIII century when it was chosen as the headquarters and abode of the noble Gridolfi family. In exactly the same period the struggles began between the two powerful dynasties within the Conca river valley, struggles which cost Montegridolfo three centuries of plundering and alternating rule.
In 1336 it was even destroyed completely by Nolfo, Count of Urbino. Reconstruction by Galeotto, patriarch of the Malatesta family, to which the small village had sworn allegiance a hundred years previously, took place the following year. Peace came only in the XVI century, with the final defeat of the Malatesta family and it still reigns supreme to this day.
