The Languages of Altamarea

The Languages of Altamarea

Strolling between the umbrellas, past the terrace of Bar Africo, by the pool, in the jacuzzi or during the afternoon activities, you can hear Altamarea’s guests talking, laughing, chatting, creating a symphony of accents and languages that only a summer by the sea can bring to life.

At Altamarea’s various reception points, you hear Diego greeting an elderly woman in a swimsuit with a warm “Bonjour, Madame” as she asks for information, or Mirella directing a newly arrived family to the pool in German. And that is precisely the kind of welcome people love: a few words in their own language that put them at ease, that bring a little taste of home to their holiday and create an immediate bond between Altamarea’s lifeguards and their guests.

Out in the sea, a group of French guests is playing with a ball, and a Belgian couple nearby is delighted to hear familiar voices during their holiday in Italy. Altamarea becomes this small world where every sunbed holds a surprise for the ears. Here, speaking another language is never a barrier. It brings people together, allows us to connect in different ways and opens us up to the world. And when words fall short, a gesture or a smile is always enough to be understood, like the Italian boy who waves his thanks to the Dutch man who returned a ball that had flown a little too far. And all the while, the sea listens patiently to the stories told under the umbrellas, the murmurs, the passionate debates over a card game, the laughter that splashes louder than the water, and the joyful shouts of the children.

There are moments when voices grow louder: during the entertainment, at the pétanque court, at beach volleyball, creating a cheerful cosmopolitan chaos. And then there is the end of the day: the sun begins to set, the light grows softer and the sunbeds bid farewell to their occupants. In that moment, the voices, the languages, grow quieter. People talk about dinner, the weather, or the plan for the next day. They say goodbye to the neighbour under the next umbrella, with an “arrivederci” or an “à demain” in whatever language feels most natural, or with a gesture that everyone understands.

In this diversity of languages, there is harmony. Perhaps because the sea puts everyone on the same level. It does not matter whether you speak loudly or softly, with a melodious or guttural accent, whether you roll your r’s the Italian way or let them rumble like in German: here, every voice finds its place. Altamarea is not just a place to sunbathe and swim. It is a place where you travel without moving, simply by lending an ear.

Leaving at the end of the day, everyone will carry with them a small piece of this summer melody, and a “grazie”, spoken with a smile, will surely linger in the memory of a visitor who came from far away.
