Everything the Sea Offers Us

Everything the Sea Offers Us

The more time I spend on the beach, the more I learn to observe it in every detail, and the more I realize that nothing I see is guaranteed to last forever. Sometimes it’s important to take a moment to reflect on the calm sea that greets us every day. In those moments, I feel our responsibility even more deeply, the responsibility to protect this landscape that appears unchanging, but is so vulnerable. And to protect the life it sustains: the seaweed dancing below the surface, the crustaceans burrowing into the sand, the birds resting on the rocks at sunset.

Protecting the coastline is a constant commitment, made up of a thousand quiet decisions. At Altamarea, they’ve understood this well. Sustainability is “a philosophy of life,” says Daniela, one of the beach’s partners. “It’s a message we try to pass on to children, but also to adults, that we must respect the sea, respect the beach. Without respect, there is destruction.”

At Altamarea, the sea is always the main character, and you can feel it in everything they do. “Even marine waste is set to become one of the stars of summer 2025, thanks to a project we’ll be announcing very soon! Through a chain of design and research, marine plastic is reused and transformed into something essential for beach life,” Daniela explains enthusiastically. “Anything the sea offers can be used, from plastic waste to seashells that are part of the marine ecosystem, to stones, sand, driftwood…” adds Mirella, showing one of her artworks made from reclaimed cardboard, fragments of shells, and small pieces of wood gathered from the sea.

And of course, we can’t talk about sustainability without addressing the crucial issue of water. “There’s less and less drinking water, so we have to teach people not to use it excessively. Our customers know this, and they need to help us. Our message is: limit your water consumption, because water is a precious resource,” says Mirella. “We also use solar panels, so the sun heats our water and produces energy. We don’t use electricity to heat the water, only the sun does that, which means we must use this hot water consciously.”

This love and respect for the sea and the environment is something learned from a young age, through creative workshops. “Our educators are fully committed to this idea of sustainability and run workshops using only natural materials,” Daniela explains. Because it’s the youngest ones who must carry this care into the future.

Through these activities with children, the foundations for a more mindful future are being laid today. It’s built day by day, by observing and listening to the sea, learning to respect its rhythms and its needs.

And I, too, realize that since I started coming to Altamarea, my perspective has changed. I no longer just see a beautiful beach, I see a precious ecosystem that depends on every one of us.
