When the Wind Carries the Summer Away

When the Wind Carries the Summer Away

The wind carries between the closed beach umbrellas the memory of a few notes of music that you recognise straight away.

It is the Altamarea Beach Village theme tune. Or perhaps just the memory of this song. Of this melody that brightened your days all summer long.

Today, the theme tune is no longer playing through the speakers in the piazzetta animazione, but the wind still carries it to Altamarea.

Yes, the beach is emptying, but slowly. The bagnini take things apart, tidy up, fold everything away.

The blue beach umbrellas, the ones you dream of in winter, close one by one. The piazzetta animazione is quiet, Elia’s microphone no longer calls out to anyone.

Looking at this beach as it begins to empty, you cannot call it the end.

Because a holiday does not really end when the last beach umbrella closes. There are also all the things that remain. The photos on your phone, the magnet on the fridge, the Altamarea fluorescent tank top in your wardrobe, the theme tune you sometimes catch yourself humming, and the stories you tell back home, all those “remember when…” moments that come back during the winter.

One day, you find yourself already thinking about next summer. About that sea, that piazzetta, that blue beach umbrella you already want to find again. And certain habits have already started waiting for their return.

Sun, sea, entertainment…

The beach is getting ready for a break. But the soul of Altamarea does not take a break, it stays with you throughout the winter.

This was season 2 of the Diario di Odéphine. A season in which I tried to tell you not only what was happening, but also how it felt. The colours, the sounds, the people, the little moments as well as the big ones.

Thank you for reading me every week,
Odéphine.
